Historical City Fortification
The building of the city fortification was permitted by the Countess Elisabeth in 1322. Most of the fortification can be dated back to the 15th century and be assigned to the Gothic. The city wall was 2.2 km long, about 1.8 km of it have been preserved. 15 of the 51 towers and shells (military fortified facilities open towards the city-side) are still maintained and can be climbed. Originally, five main gates protected the city, but only one of them, Johannistor, is still preserved. In the second half of the 19th century the city ditches were filled in and an ornamental promenade was created.

Gardens and Parks
Artistically designed gardens and parks represent the image of Aschersleben since the 19th century. Due to the renovations made for the State Horticultural Show in 2010 the parks turned to green oases inviting guests to have a walk. New paths lead from one garden to another and connect the parks “Herrenbreite”, “Bestehornpark” and “Stadtpark” with the shady “Promenadenring” (walking path around the medieval city fortification). These parks are a part of “Gartenträume” (“Garden Dreams”) – a network of historical parks in Saxony-Anhalt.
